Adulthood is a period of everyone’s life that you recognize through a bunch of fresh happenings that you experience in your lives. Moving out from your own home to a new space for fresh beginnings in life is one of the significant events which happens as a part of the adulthood stage. From finding a new space to engaging with the daily chores of life, the moving out phase is plenty of numerous fresh experiences in one’s life where people learn life skills for themselves. Cooking is one of the major ones on the list. Successful or traumatic, people have an end number of stories to share about their first cooking experience after they moved out from home.
“My first cooking experience after moving out is pretty disastrous. I never had any experience with cooking when I was home. I didn’t know about making any simple food,” said Riya Joseph, a final year post-graduation student on remembering about her first cooking experience.

“When I moved out and I was cooking for the first time, I got my mom on a video call and put her up on the window where she can see what I was doing. She instructed me on what to do. I had all the spices and everything kept in the glass jars that everything looked a-like. I held up this spoonful of spices and asked her if the spices and their measurements are enough for the curry. It took a very long time. But I accidentally put the coffee powder in the curry that I was making instead of the spice. Eventually, my first cooking experience turned into a coffee-flavored curry. It was a pretty memorable and traumatic experience for me,” Riya added about her first cooking experience.
Shada Amina, a master's student from Bangalore experienced a similar disastrous experience when she tried cooking for the first time after moving out from her home for under-graduation.
“I lived in a PG during the first year of my under graduation. Then I had an electric kettle with me. My first own cooking experience is associated with that kettle that I remember to date. Usually, I used to boil water and make tea and coffee in my kettle. But on one night, when I felt an eager craving for the creamy sausage pasta that my mom used to make at home, I decided to make the same in my kettle by using the limited provisions. I bought a creamy pasta sachet and sausage from the nearby shop. The cooking enthusiast in me decides to cook the sausage first in the kettle. The moment the sausage gets to boil, the raw smell of sausage spread in the room. On top of that, I added the pasta mix into the kettle. My hilarious cooking experiment damaged my kettle, and I realized that creamy sausage was not meant to be cook in a kettle,” shared Shada.
Even it is disastrous, everyone remembers their first lessons of cooking as a significant chapter of their moving out stage. The stage of life that everyone loves to reminisce about forever in their lives.
